"Boating Party” reflects Philip’s special affinity with pelicans. A  flock of these remarkable birds congregate in a quiet backwater on a  sparkling clear morning. In the background a gentle tide rocks an odd  assortment of old boats. Are the pelicans waiting sharp-eyed for a  fishing boat to glide in with the night’s catch, poised to race the  nimble silver gulls for a dropped morsel? Or are they drowsing  companionable in the sun, bellies full for another day?

“I grew up near the sea and I have wonderful memories of life around  the waterfront,” say Philip. “When I was a kid I often paddled up the local creek in a canoe. I loved watching the pelicans coming in to land  and hanging around the fishing boats looking for a feed.”.
